Right, Sutter Cane back again with another installment of my continuing journey through the history of WCW. This time we'll be covering all of the Nitros for the month of December in 1995, and the buildup to WCW's biggest event of the year, Starrcade. So without further ado, let's jump right in, shall we?
WCW Monday Nitro 11/27/1995
So, we have a lot of questions still to be answered from the PPV.
1. What exactly is the deal with Sting and Luger
2. Will the World heavyweight Championship picture get sorted out after the unconventional finish of the battle royal, and most importantly
3. are the guys in the running for the main event slot at Starrcade really a guy who can't wrestle a good match because he's too inexperienced, a guy who probably won't be able to put on a good match because he's hurt, and Hulk Hogan?
Johnny B Badd (with Kimberly) vs Diamond Dallas Page
DDP comes out with a bouquet of flowers to give to Kimberly to try to get her back.
he hands her the flowers and them immediately attacks Johnny B Badd
turns out DDP hid a chain in the flowers he handed Kimberly, but when DDP asks for the chain and she throws it. It ends up throwing it between Page's legs and to Johnny B Badd
Johnny hits DDP with the chain, but the ref doesn't seem to care and picks up the victory
the focus here stays almost entirely on Kimberly and where her loyalties lie, and it really works from a story perspective
After the match Johnny confronts Kimberly on whether she meant to throw the chain to him or to Dallas, but she's reluctant to answer insisting that he won and that's what matters
Interview with Jimmy Hart and Kevin Sullivan. Sullivan has a bine to pick with Hart since Lex Luger (who hart is also managing) is running around with sting. Hart hints that he has something up his sleeve
Cutie Suzuki & Mayumi Ozaki vs Bull Nakano & Akria Hokuto
Looks like we have a PPV rematch tonight, folks.
The refs just don't seem to care about blatant and extended double teaming in these matches it seems
They're making a big deal abut the agreements they have with different Japanese promotions. Not complaining about that at all.
Ozaki picks up the victory with an inverted brainbuster
Not as good as their ppv match, but still pretty fun
Hugh Morris vs Hulk Hogan
Hugh Morris completely whiffs on the moonsault. Just kind of embarrassing
hogan wins via leg drop of doom, as if anyone expected anything different
savage cuts a promo about how he's pumped to be champion and how he's going to go on a reign of terror. isn't he a face?
Hogan comes out and confronts savage on the finish to the war games match, and says he deserves a shot since he was never thrown over the top rope. Hogan goes to show macho man the tape but it cuts out right at the crucial moment
Giant comes out and attacks them both. I know he's involved in a feud with hogan, but he really had nothing to do with that segment
sting comes out to assist hogan. hogan uses sting's distraction to get a chair and hit giant with it multiple times. He also ends up elbowing a ref
those are the weakest shots to the head that 've ever seen. I mean if you don't feel comfotable doing them (which they probably shouldn't) then just plain don't do them. on't just barely tap someone with the chair and expect us to buy it
Bischoff asks why Sting was trying to call hogan off the giant
Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman vs Lex Luger and Sting
Luger doesn't come out to the ring with sting. He ends up coming out slightly later.
thought they were going to do the exact same thing they did at Halloween Havoc with flair there for a sec
sting gets Anderson into the scorpion deathlock, and Pillman climbs the turnbuckle to prepare to break up the pin. Luger runs over and throws him off right into Sting.
Given how much they seem to be building the whole sting seems to be helping Luger out thing, having them be a uncooperative tag team for their match doesn't seem to make sense
Sting picks up the win via a roll up. Flair comes out to attack Luger, and the horsemen deliver a beatdown on the two until Hogan comes in to make the save.
Hogan starts t go after Luger, but sting pulls him off, and the two exchange some words that we can't hear.
Is every upper card match going to result in a giant clusterfuck of run ins after/during the finish?
Overall a fun tag match.
WCW Monday Nitro 12/04/1995
I think I may need a flowchart to keep track of all these character relationships. Let me see if I've got this straight. Hogan is currently feuding with Kevin Sullivan and Giant (and by extension the rest of dungeon of doom). Savage is having a mini feud with Hogan even though they're still friends, and is also feuding with Luger who is a member of the dungeon of doom. Luger, however, is currently in a tag team with sting, who is aligned with Hogan and Savage, and those two are feuding with the horsemen now it seems. The horsemen, in addition to taking on sting and Luger are also feuding with Eddie Guerrero for some reason. Yeah I think i need that chart.
apparently Hogan, Flair and Giant are all on probation
WCW World Tag Team Championship match: The American Males (Marcus Bagwell and Scotty Riggs) vs Harlem Heat (Booker T and Stevie Ray) (c)
I get the feeling Stevie Ray just isn't very good
Well, we get more Colonel Parker/Sister Sherri antics, but at least this time it's related to the people in the match. Apparently Parker got Sherri a ring. they kiss and leave
Man, Bagwell's kicks look WEAK
The match isn't bad at all when Booker's in, but when Stevie ray has to get involved it's just dull
Booker T hits the Harlem Hangover and picks up the win. Harlem Heat retains
Sting and Luger come out to cut a promo. Sting says that he thinks Luger has a good chance of becoming champion later tonight, but that, even though they're friends, he's not going to go easy on Luger when they end up facing off in a triple threat at Starrcade. Luger assures Sting that he won't go easy on him either.
I really like the current dynamic between the two right now.
Sting vs Kurasawa
Unremarkable match. Sting picks up the victory
Bobby Heenan apparently has a problem saying the T in Starrcade.
Scott Norton vs The Giant
It'd be nice to see Norton in a match with someone who is actually good in the ring.
Holy crap, Norton picks up the giant and holds him up on his shoulder for a good 6-7 seconds. Would have been more impressive if it would have ended in a slam rather than an atomic drop. Dude has some strength
apparently the C in WCW now stands for Committed. I don't know, World Committed Wrestling just doesn't have the same ring to it
The Giant hits the choke slam and gets the victory
Heenan says (in response to the replay of him getting choke slammed) that he may as well be "Ed Norton". I find this odd, since if I did hear him correctly, and if he is making a reference to the actor, Edward Norton's first film (Primal Fear) wouldn't be out for another 4 months. If there's another Ed Norton that I should know about, please tell me.
Okerlund announces tat Ric Flair is coming to the ring, and Charles Barkley comes out with him. This actually seems to make a lot of sense as far as celebrity cameos go. Sure as hell makes a lot more sense than the people WWE usually brings in for theirs. Seems kind of pointless to just have him come out for an episode of nitro though, instead of getting him involved in some fashion with Starrcade, even if they do happen to be in Phoenix this week
WCW World Heavyweight Championship: Lex Luger vs Randy Savage (c)
This match is taking forever to get started
I think it's is kind of humorous that despite the fact that Savage is the one with the arm injury, It's savage that's actually really working over Luger's arm.
Jimmy hart keeps blowing a whistle and it's really fucking annoying
Bischoff making a huge deal about the overrun. Kind of funny, given that RAW seems to have a 15-20 minute overrun every week nowadays
Savage clocks the ref right in the face for some reason, but it doesn't result in a DQ.
Bischoff takes a shot at raw by saying "do you want to watch wrestling or do you want to watch people talk about wrestling?" I assume this quote will be hilarious down the line.
Luger accidentally runs into the ref, and the ref falls out of the ring. Savage then hits the elbow drop but there's no one there to count the pin. Jimmy Hart tries to interfere but savage goes to stop him. Ric Flair then comes out to attack Savage. Apparently Hart and flair are working together now?
Then Hulkster comes out and points at Flair. Hulk catches him before he gets away, but then lets flair go anyway for some reason. he then drags the ref back into the ring, and begins to attack Jimmy Hart, causing a disqualification. Hogan then picks Luger and Hart up and knocks their heads together. He goes to punch Luger again, and sting pulls him out of the way, resulting in Sting getting clocked in the face. Sting and Hogan then get in each others faces before Savage separates them
you know I think I may have to start tallying the number of matches that end in complete Clusterfucks of run ins, rather than just stupid finishes, because this seems to be happening like every single week now
Complete Clusterfuck of a finish count: 5 (Hogan vs The Giant at Halloween Havoc, Flair vs Sting 11/6/95, Sting vs Hogan 11/20/95, last week's main event and this week's main event)
they go to commercial and when we come back things have dies down slightly, but sting hogan and savage are still all in the ring. Hulk confronts sting about how they're supposed to team up against Flair and Anderson the following week, and he wants to know what the deal with Luger is, and which side sting is on.
Now this makes absolutely no sense in relation to their match against the horsemen, because both Sting and Luger received a post-match beatdown from the horsemen LAST FUCKING WEEK! "Yeah Sting, I just really have to know, are you on my side brother, and are against the horsemen, or are you on Luger's side, who is... also against the horsemen. This is a real sticking point with me dude."
Luger says that he's on hulk's side, but because Luger is a long time friend of his, he wants to try to straighten Luger out rather than abandon him
Savage also is against Luger, but sting continues to stick up for him
Hulk requests that Sting keep Luger out of hulk's face since they're going to be tag team partners. Sting agrees to this.
WCW Monday Nitro 12/11/1995
Eddie Guerrero vs JL
Both wrestlers get a jobber entrances here
Eddie seems to impress me even more every single time
Some "Eddie" chants coming from the crowd. Apparently they agree
Now i'm wondering how slick the inside of the ring is, because Eddie has been literally sliding all over it.
apparently one of the gimmicks for Starrcade is a showdown between guys from NJPW and WCW. Should be fun.
Eddie picks up the win.
Luger and hart cut a promo on Macho Man.
Disco Inferno vs "Mr Wonderful" Paul Orndorff
Paul Orndorff is still wrestling?
the muscle atrophy in his arm is really noticeable
Orndorff mocks Disco inferno's dancing. Nice.
quick match. really seemed like a time filler.
The Horsemen come out (sans Benoit) to hype the tag team main event later in the night. They have Pillman cut the majority of the promo on hogan despite the fact he's not involved in the match. Pillman also takes a shot at Orndorff and his recent association with Gary Spivey. Orndorff comes out and interrupts flair to come out and confront Pillman. they eventually start brawling on the floor. The Horsemen eventually get the advantage, and deliver a beat down culminating in a piledriver onto the concrete.
After we come back from commercial we see Orndorff in a neck brace, still on the floor, being carefully put on a stretcher
Lex Luger vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan
throughout the match we cut back to the medical team attending to Orndorff, and loading him into an ambulance
Hart ends up getting the ref's attention and Duggan begins to tape his hand. Duggan goes after hart, but Luger gets him in the torture rack and picks up the victory.
I am not a Jim Duggan fan at all.
Savage comes out and cuts a promo on his title match next week against the Giant. They're still trying to claim that he's Andre's son.
Ric Flair and Arn Anderson vs Hulk Hogan and Sting
There's Still over 20 minutes left in the show, so it looks like we'll be getting a good long match here.
Sting comes out by himself for like the 3rd time now, but Hogan makes his way to the ring before the match starts.
The camera gives us a close up of Sting's ass to start the match. Odd production choice
Ooh, a really nice technical sequence between Flair and sting. Hell their parts in this match have been better than their match at WW3
Luger interferes to attack hogan and puts him in the rack. Why? I have no goddamn idea, as Luger should want to see the horsemen beat, given that he got a beatdown from them. Would be nice if they mentioned something about that.
Hogan eventually gets tagged in, hulks up, and gets his team the victory.
Pillman then comes out, and the horsemen go to work on Hogan and Sting.
Actually I have to retract my earlier remark about Luger's actions not making sense, as he comes out to protect Sting from a horsemen beatdown, but dues nothing to help Hogan
then Savage comes out, and Sting attacks Him. Hogan tries to separate the two.
Overall a pretty fun match the advances the storyline. Can't really complain too much, but still,
Clusterfuck Finishes: 6
Actually, Macho Man coming out when he did doesn't really make sense unless he was actually trying to attack sting, since he didn't make his entrance until after the brawl with the horsemen was over.
Hogan talks about how they can't afford to be fighting amongst each other at the moment. Macho Man wants answers. Sting says he only hit macho man out of reflex. Hogan sticks up for sting by pointing out that Sting just helped Hogan out in the post match brawl. Savage and Sting reconcile to close the show.
Seems like things in the main event scene are getting quite complicated, and it certainly makes me want to keep watching.
WCW Monday Nitro 12/18/1995
While Bischoff, Heenan, and Mongo are doing their intro to the show, all of a sudden Madusa shows up with the WWF Women's Championship, and throws it in the garbage.
My first thought: WCW has a women's wrestling division?
Looks like we're starting to get into some of the historic moments. I can only imagine how shocking this must have been to people who had never seen it before.
Then right afterwards they bring out William "The Refrigerator" Perry to run security for the announcers.
Ric Flair vs Eddie Guerrero
Eddie gets a Jobber entrance for this one. Really looking forward to this one.
The two just kind of stand around for a while. Kind of a waste of the time they've been allotted.
FUCKING DO SOMETHING
There we go.
Or not. whatever.
Flair eventually picks up the victory with the figure 4. How the hell do you get 2 of the greatest wrestlers of all time in the ring like that, and have such and uninteresting match?
Why exactly are Eddie and The Horsemen feuding? Eddie's hasn't actually cut any promos, so I'm really just not sure. I mean there were shenanigans after like one of the matches between Eddie and Chris Benoit, but they didn't seem to really follow up on it. Then they announced that Benoit was part of the horsemen, and suddenly Eddie is feuding with the entire stable. The Horsemen certainly don't have any reason to be interested in Eddie Guerrero, and like I said they never seemed to really follow up on the thing with Benoit.
Speaking of which, where the hell is Chris Benoit, anyway?
Kevin Sullivan comes out and interrupts their promo. He has a beef with Brian Pillman and tells Arn Anderson that he needs to keep Pillman on a short leash or he'll send the dungeon after them.
Craig "Pitbull" Pittman comes up to the announcer's table, and tries to say something, but the mic he has doesn't work. Nice job production guys
they give him an new mic, and Pittman asks Heenan to manage him. Heenan says that he's no longer a manager, but he'll put him in contact with someone. Pitbull says it better be soon
Lex Luger vs Marcus Bagwell
Bagwell's arm drag needs work.
Luger gets Bagwell in the torture rack and picks up the win.
Pretty typical tv match. Not bad, but unremarkable
Hart and Luger cut a promo about how he's the "uncrowned world heavyweigt champion"
Earl Robert Eaton vs Sting
Who the fuck is Earl Robert Eaton, and what did he do to get stuck with such a shitty gimmick?
To no one's surprise, sting picks up the win
Nothing else about the match is worth mentioning
Another promo about the triple threat match.
You know from the way they've been building up Starrcade on Nitro, you'd think it'd be just a 2.5 hour long triple threat match with maybe a couple of short matches with the Japanese wrestlers thrown in at the beginning.
Randy Savage vs The Giant
I'm not a huge fan of the type of match that The Giants seems to put on at this point (ie, huge guy vs much smaller guy). It's just not visually very interesting to me
Damn, the Giant breaking out dropkicks and doing a dive from the top rope. never mind, this is pretty fun.
I'm not actually sure ow to accurately describe the spot I just watched. The giant moves the mats out of the way and attempts to suplex Savage on to the concrete, but somehow Savage ends up inside the ring, and the giant gets tripped up and falls on to the concrete himself. just looked really weird
Apparently the chokeslam isn't enough to keep savage down, so giant has to break out the leg drop. Then right after he does so, Hogan runs out to the ring with a chair, and hits the giant in full view of the ref. The ref does nothing, except try to get hogan out of the ring. Then taskmaster tries to attack hogan, but hogan punches him to the floor
Hogan then hits giant with the chair again in full view of the ref, Giant picks up the victory by DQ
Hogan then attacks the ref as well
The Fridge down to ringside, and hulk nearly attacks him too.
Hulk Hogan cuts a promo. In the middle of it, the giant, being held back by Sullivan and some other guy, comes out to attack the Hulkster, and is calling him out. Hulk then charges down the ramp and starts attacking the giant wit a chair yet again.
Hogan finishes his promo and says Savage owes him a title shot
Apparently Savage is defending the title next week on Nitro as well against Ric Flair.
Savage says he'll get his match after Starrcade.
Savage then asks hogan for the chair, because he thinks he can make a bunch of money from it by selling it as memorabilia after he gets it signed by Sullivan and the Giant. I swear I'm not making this up. This is also how the show ends
WCW Monday Nitro 12/25/1995
Yeah, they're doing a live Christmas episode. I feel sorry for the talent involved. It's gotta suck to have to work on Christmas.
Bischoff is wearing a really dorky Christmas sweater. It's quite amusing
Lex Luger vs Scotty Riggs
Preparing for a quick squash match since Starrcade is only a couple of days away. Whose idea was it anyway to hold Starrcade on a Wednesday anyway? Wouldn't that lead to fewer buys?
Wow, this is a much more competitive match than i was expecting. Riggs is actually pretty solidly in control for the first five minutes of the match
Luger does eventually pick up the win of course.
Cut over to Okerlund and sting. Okerlund asks sting about him and Luger, and sting gives the same answer he's been giving. That Luger is his friend, and he's trying to straighten him out.
Big Bubba Rogers vs Sting
Pretty standard nitro match here. Bubba does bust out an enzuigiri at one point, which is always cool to see from a big guy, but otherwise not all that remarkable.
Sting picks up the win to no one's surprise
Luger and Hart get a promo now, and cover the exact same stuff sting's does. Luger also insists that he and sting are friends and that there's nothing more to it than that
Criag Pittman interrupts and asks Jimmy Hart to be his manager hart turns him down. This must be what it feels like for the crowd in a WWE Raw 2 Season mode
Dean Malenko vs J.L.
There's really not any story or purpose behind this match, but i'm certainly not complaining about the matchup. These two are great in the ring
Is there any real reason they stuck Jerry Lynn with a masked luchador gimmick?
Malenko does some kind of weird gutbuster where he jumps off the 2nd rope while bringing JL down onto his knee to gain extra momentum. The logic behind it is sound, but it just looks weird
Malenko gets JL to submit not long after. A Pretty short match, but it was fun while it lasted
Flair then gets his promo slot. as usual, the only match they're hyping for Starrcade is the triple threat match. He also has a match with savage for the World Heavyweight Championship against Savage later tonight.
Jimmy Hart interrupts Flair's promo to thank him for saving him from savage back in Phoenix, and asks to accompany him to ringside. Flair accepts. A great promo from 2 great talkers
WCW World Heavyweight Championship Match: Ric Flair vs Macho Man Randy Savage (c)
You know what i'm really loving about WCW right now? The shows really are about wrestling. So often nowadays it seems like RAW's main event will be a promo, or a really ruched main event match, but it seems that week in and week out Nitro makes room for a 15-20 minute main event match, and I dig that.
Wow, Macho Man locking the figure 4 in on flair early on here. No, I didn't get the names reversed. Macho man locks in a figure 4 before Flair does here.
D'aww, savage was getting a beatdown on the outside, and gets thrown into the guard rail, and is motionless against it, with his arms draped over the top, so some kids come running down the aisle and over to him to give him a pat on the back and encourage him to get up. A really cute moment.
Jimmy Hart keeps attacking macho man whenever he has the chance as well
Some really good storytelling in this match. I thought the general consensus was that Macho Man basically couldn't go anymore by this point. I mean sure he's kind of slow, but he's more than capable of telling a good story in the ring.
I like how Bischoff keeps mentioning whenever their show is running long. Really makes you feel like you're getting something extra, even if it happens fairly often. Don't understand why they don't do the same thing on raw
Uh oh, here we go again
*takes deep breath* So Savage starts to make his comeback, and it looks like he's regained control of the match until jimmy hart comes up on to the apron and tries to get a cheap shot in on Randy. Savage sees this and knocks hart off the apron. Flair uses the distraction to make an attack but savage blocks his punch and savage still maintains control. Or at least it looks that way until Lex Luger runs down to the ring and starts beating the crap out of savage, giving the victory by DQ (this actually makes sense, as Luger both has a beef with savage, and specifically wants to beat him for the belt). Sting then comes running down to the ring to break up the fight, but he's intercepted by flair. Luger and flair eventually leave the ring. We end the final Nitro before Starrcade with sting and savage getting into a shoving match in the center of the ring.
Actually not adding this one to the clusterfuck finishes counter, because my current criterion for that is 3 or more run-ins during the finish.
Pretty damn fun match though, and an excellent way to end the final show before Starrcade. I know I'm pumped for it
Actually, why the hell DID they choose to have Starrcade on a Wednesday? I mean my initial hunch was that so they'd have the first nitro after Starrcade be the first show of the new year, or something like that, until I actually stopped and thought for a moment and realized that Sunday would have been the 31st and thus worked perfectly as a year-ending show. I just don't get it.
