Sutter Cane Watches WCW: Halloween Havoc 1995

Halloween Havoc 1995

who the fuck thought a monster truck battle at a wrestling ppv was a good idea

and a major story line event happens off screen (flair being attacked and injured), and we're just told that it happened rather than actually being shown anything

Johnny B Badd vs DDP for the Television Championship

I wonder why they never seem to mention the names of the refs anymore.

so this match started off well enough, but now has spent like two straight minutes in nothing rest holds

the one thing I do kind of like about this kind of wrestling is how every slam and suplex is treated as potentially devastating

They're clearly not using the "throwing someone over the top rope = disqualification" thing any more, so why to the commentators keep drawing attention to the rule?

That's kind of an odd finish. Johnny B Badd hits his finisher which only gets a 2 count, but an accidental clothesline by Max Muscle is good enough to get the job done

Still overall a solid opening match.

Savage vs Zodiac

This was a match that happened. That's about that can be said about it.

Savage wins

Anyone else find it odd that a wrestler named Johnny B Badd is a face?

Road Warrior Hawk vs Kurasawa

Another really short match. Kurasawa gets a dirty win. Nothing else to say

Randy Savage is absolutely insane, and it's awesome.

Savage really looks like he as ADD or something in this promo. He constantly fidgets around, turns his back completely to the camera, looks just about everywhere except where you're supposed to when giving an interview, and then makes a completely out of nowhere comment about gene's mustache is crooked, Which savage admits is entirely unrelated to what they were talking about, and then goes out of his way to say that it wasn't meant as a knock at gene, but that is was just something he noticed and wanted to inform him about. Still an awesome promo

JL vs Sabu

Still not used to seeing ring steps along the sides of the right rather than at the corners

I'm really going to miss Sabu once he leaves. his matches are really fun to watch

Wow, the crowd is completely dead for this match, and I don't understand why.

Sabu picks up the win with the Arabian press, and i'm suddenly aware that I miss John Morrison being in WWE

The master and Kevin Sullivan cut a promo, AND IT SEEMS. LIKE THE MASTER. CAN'T STOP. SHOUTING. EVERYTHING HE SAYS. AND THAT. HE CAN'T SAY. MORE THAN 2-3 WORDS. AT THE SAME TIME.

Lex Luger vs Meng

there's a close up of a headstone that's part of the Hallowen Havoc set that they've marked "Crockett". I see what you did there.

Meng is thrown out of the ring, and stays on the outside of about 30 seconds, but the ref doesn't even begin to count

The whole story they're doing with Luger and Savage in this PPV just seems like an all around ba idea. The story is that if savage and Luger both win their matches against members of the dungeon of doom, they get to face each other later in the night.

I mean you're kind of reducing the matches against main heel faction to basically just "the thing that has to happen before the thing we're really excited about.

I'm actually surprised with how long this match is going on, given the length of Savage's match.

Kevin Sullivan comes in right as Meng is about to get the win and breaks up the pin, giving Luger a victory by DQ. I think i may be smelling a Luger heel turn (despite the fact that it seems like that wouldn't make a lot of sense)

Kind of a dull match, but I've seen far worse

Giant comes out and cuts a promo

Is it just me, or is all of this monster truck stuff completely isolated from the rest of the hogan/giant feud?

Also, why Monster trucks?

Arn Anderson and Brian Pillman vs Flair and Sting

Sting comes out by himself and Slair in nowhere to be seen at the start of the match

Unsurprisingly, this match is really damn good

The way they've been doing this, they're really making it seem like sting is reall staying in this by using his cunning to stay in this match rather than just overpowering his opponents and making them look weak.

Also, Flair comes sprinting down to ringside in his street colthes and starts beating the crap out of everybody.

It seems really weird that Sting was doing really well before flair shows up, but as soon as Flair makes it down to ringside he starts getting dominated

still, other than that the storytelling in this match is absolutely fantastic.

Unrelated to this particular match, but why is it that tag team members are seemingly allowed to come in and break up pins when they're not the legal man? I think it could add some more drama to tag matches if the partner is basically helpless to do anything but watch as their partner is pinned since interference would mean a disqualification

flair gets the tag and turns on sting. Looks like the horsemen are back together. eventually the match ends in disqualification. Really good match. Pretty solid twist ending.

Flair then cuts an amazing promo about the horsemen getting back together. I'm excited to see the horsemen back in action, especially with Brian Pillman in their ranks

Luger cuts a a promo and nearly says "the WWF" instead of WCW.

Hulk Hogan vs the Giant: Sumo Monster Truck battle:

Why? Just Why? What do monster trucks have to do with anything? I mean I know the storyline justification for it, but what the hell do monster trucks have to do with wrestling. I mean i can understand why WCW wanted to shell out a bunch of money to bring in celebrities like Dennis Rodman, even if I do think it was a bad move, but what are they even trying to achieve with this whole monster truck thing? I just don't get it. As far as I know, monster trucks aren't particularly mainstream.

Seeing all this is giving me the sudden urge to watch Battlebots/robot wars again.

Hogan end up winning, but who really cares

Not as disastrous as I was expecting, but still completely pointless

Hogan and the Giant get into a brawl. Giant gets knocked off the roof. Pretty cool moment actually.

Bischoff and Heenan selling the moment really well too

Lex Luger vs Randy Savage

I can't put my finger on why, but Savage's beard looks really weird

and Luger looks to be completely no selling his injuries from his earlier match with meng

are there no count outs in WCW or something, as savage and Luger brawl on the outside for a good amount of time

macho man picks up the win with an elbow drop, in a really anti-climactic finish. The match actually started off intense and entertaining, but once they had jimmy hart interfere, they whole thing just went to shit

Heenan's supposed to be the heel commentator right? Cause He's dead on about Shcivone not being nearly concerned enough about the fact that a man was just thrown off the top of a fucking building.

Michael Buffer botch #1: Calls Hulk Hogan "The King of Hulk Mania"

Hogan starts to deliver a promo about how he didn't mean to throw Giant off of the roof, but The Giant inturrupts him by coming to the ring

Michael Buffer botch #2: Calls the Taskmaster "Task-Masker"

Hogan vs The Giant for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship

this match takes forever to start up, as hogan takes forever to reveal that he now has the same facepaint as taskmaster.Which is just really stupid

a lot of strikes are exchanged, and not much actual wrestling, and yet somehow I'm not bored yet, or at least i wasn't until they decide to just basically sit still and not do anything for an eternity.

Did Hogan just Kiss The Giant, cause the camera angle they chose sure as hell made it look like he did

OK, this match does not need to go on nearly this long

I get it guys, the bear hug hurts. Now fucking do something, or you know just stay there basically standing still for another solid minute.

Hart turns on hogan right as he's about to win.No idea why, but the distraction is enough to allow giant to regain advantage.

and Luger starts attacking savage to the surprise of no one, as fucking everyone comes out to the ring.

Also, who thought that the yeti was a good idea?

The giant wins by DQ, but for the life of me I can't figure out why, since everyone who interfered was attacking hogan, and it has nothing to do with the confusion of the original ref, since he was still out. How the fuck does that make any sense?

Again this ppv just was not very good at all. I'm starting to get the feeling that shitty ppvs are going to be a theme in WCW, aren't they?
Additional thoughts: Luger being a member of the dungeon of doom really doesn't make any sense to me since he was actively being targeted by them up until this ppv. Their isn't a lot of logic behind flair re-forming the horsemen either, but given that Ric Flair is insane it actually does make sense in a weird way.
